Listening to Li Bai

by Rob Schackne

Sitting on the porch
waiting for the rain to stop
I dream of poems, then
a lifetime of travel
one dream after another
riding here to there
all the villages we passed
the kind words & laughter
the art of captivity
how far do you go
the horses were impassive
we might've turned back

Written after I’d just finished Ha Jin’s excellent and very evocative recent biography of Li Bai, the great 8th century Tang dynasty poet.

Biography
Born in New York, Rob lived in many countries until Australia finally took him in. He was a Foreign Expert EFL teacher in China for many years. He now lives in regional Victoria. When he’s not writing, he likes taking photographs.
